I have been busy pinning parts of kitchens and all sorts of interior ideas for our renovation. At the moment we are using the early 70's kitchen we inherited - want a peek?
So dreaming what the new extension with a fab open plan kitchen will be like, is what I do while walking the dogs. And I thought I'd pick your brains, what do you love about your kitchen, what do you wish you had done to make life easier? The biggest mistake? Worst flooring ideas?
This is our old kitchen, the floor was my biggest regret, it was honed travertine tile and did pit. Also although a light floor did help lighten the kitchen it also showed every paw print, I'm not ubber house proud but hate to see a long line of paw prints and with 2 dogs and a cat - well... The drawers were also a look that for me, didn't work. I have found the microwave we inherited here brilliant and having never had one (I know it sounds odd) it is on my wish list, along with pull out larder unit. What's your best appliances or things you could not live without, I loved my dishwasher drawers - could be used separately or together and great if there are only a few of you. Do you have a boiling water tap? Any advice you can give would be great.

I think your last kitchen looks amazing, We have recently done ours. it hasn't got a finished picture ( been a bit lazy) but you can see it nearly finished here http://wellydog.blogspot.com/search/label/Kitchen.
I wouldn't go for pull out baskets again in our tall cupboard, I never pull them out like I thought I would as I can see whats at the back well enough, so they were a bot of a waste. I love the wooden worktops, now they have really settled in they are amazing, and oiling them isn't as bad as I thought, quite easy in fact. Again I love my ceramic sink, and the floor, we liked it so much in our last kitchen we didn't replace but just added to it. Its slate effect laminate. I would have liked real slate, but know people who have had it and not been pleased. If your last one is anything to go buy , I bet you do a great job.
I love your old kitchen and I love your new one, and can`t wait to see what you do to it. I have the worst kitchen ever and couldn`t possibly show photos of it!
As a former interior designer I have a million of ideas (not always good) that I want to implement in my house. We've just bought a house and are in the very slow process of doing it up. Our kitchen is uber 80s and is fine for now. The shower room is our first project.
real stone is always hard in a kitchen- no matter what the salesmen will say. Porcelain ceramic tiles can look just as good and are available in any colour and you can have them in almost identical finishes. I use this company when I was working on commercial projects.http://www.granitifiandre.com/
I think that having really small handles especially on low units- ideally ones that sit flush when not in use (ikea does some) or are a cut away are good as I get overly annoyed with getting clothes caught on handles (especially on bathrobes on sleepy early mornings).
Other than that I think your kitchen tap is really important- make sure you see it in the flesh first and if you go for a stainless steel sink make sure it's draining ridges are high enough to clear any pooling water... oh I could go on...
you can see my shower room plans here: http://elinorjenkinsjewellery.blogspot.com/2012/01/interiors-project-01-shower-room.html
good luck with the kitchen and i look forward to seeing what you do
A new kitchen is on my wishlist too, but it's in the special section reserved for when we win the lottery. In the meantime I'll struggle on with a mixture of original 1930s cupboards, pale apricot 1980s chipboard joinery and an ancient oven. First on my list though would be a proper sink large enough to hold an oven tray. And call me a wimp, but a boiling water tap just seems too risky!
Good luck!
I will be posting photos of our new kitchen. I think we can always have a list of items and still long for more but I do love that my new kitchen is easy to clean. White glassos counters which most people might not want but as an artist, I cannot get enough white.
Now as for mits and aprons....I have the perfect set:)
Thanks so much,
pve
Your old kitchen was very nice and I'm looking forward to seeing your newly extended kitchen. I noticed a pink Kitchen Aid. That has been on my wish list for a while, but my kitchen is tiny. It was decorated by the previous owner before we moved in so we kept everything apart from the oven, washing machine and fridge.
Well, I could write a book about kitchens. Me and my husband love to cook so our dream kitchen is forever changing. We recently refurbish our kitchen (just to leave the house a few months later but we managed to rent it so quick thanks to that kitchen!)
The floor like you say if it is too light it will show every paw but it if is too dark it will do the same. I went for a light brownish and it worked wonders.
I couldn't live without my dishwasher either, it helps me to be tidy whilst I'm cooking.
I don't have a boiling water tap because I don't think I need it. I don't drink hot drinks that much, we got a pretty cool kettle (electric) that we got here in Oz, but I also used to have one of those chunky Le Creuset kettles too.
I hope you get your dream kitchen and you enjoy design it it. One piece of advise that a designer gave me was to think how and what we cook. ie bake, do you cook on your own, do you have dogs, is it strong smelly food that you cook, etc... all those things sometimes get overlooked but when you are actually using your kitchen you wish you had!
